WILLIAMS FAMILY LETTERS- #9

John to Abiel

                                                                                    Dudley, July 4, 1864

Dear Brother:

I wrote you but a day or two ago, but Hezekiah wishes me to write to you a few lines today- the Fourth of July – that our brother George is gone.

He was wounded on the 16th and died the 21st ult1. O how real the war seems when it comes to our own door. God grant that your precious life may be spared, and you be permitted to come home and be a comfort to mother and to us all.

I cannot realize his death yet, but the reality will come.

Excuse me from writing more at present.

                                                                                    As ever your affect.

                                                                                                Bro. John

P.S. Edwin Goodell is not quite as well. They are nearly discouraged about his recovery.

                                                                                    J.H.W.

1 Records show that George Champion Williams died on June 17, 1864 of wounds received on June 16, 1864 in an assault on entrenchments at Petersburg, VA.
