GOODELL FAMILY LETTERS- #46

Anson to Parents

Brookfield Feb. 18

Dear Father and Mother:

Your kind favor duly came to hand and we take this opportunity to answer. Am glad indeed that you write such a good long letter giving so many particulars of Dudley & vicinity. Ellen is very sorry to hear of the death of Mr. Rufus Freeman.

I should think it would be a hard question to settle whether you will go to farming in the spring or not since prices range so high for stock and grain and hay. It seems to one it would be quite as well to commence & do what you can on your land if you don’t buy stock & hay now you can hire teams quite as cheap as to keep them on boughten hay. But the best way is to watch for favorable openings & take advantage of providence.

We are getting along nicely in the shop. Since I was at home my work has been changed and now I cut mens work mostly very heavy but the greater part is kip not quite as hard as some lots of splits that I have had. I have now under weigh lots of mens kip Belgians boys kip belg. & mens & boys Bealmorals. Saturday PM Waldo put me to sorting and the shop is so full of hands that I may by another week follow sorting entirely. There are some twenty four cutters doublers and skivers and they don’t give Waldo much time to sort. I try to have him hold up a little and not work quite as hard but he says he can stand it.

Our health is first rate. Ellen is much better than (?) where at home and we are enjoying our new home very much. Our bills are nearly all paid and I have about $50 left beside your note. I think we shall get along first rate. Come up and see us Mother and by and by count the little A.P.s as they cry “Gramma.’

I will send your Carpetbag by the first opportunity.

Mr. Elliot & Emma were here and spent two days & three nights with us this week and we had a very pleasant visit indeed and I do wish you could come and look at us in our pleasant “home on the hill.” I don’t think there is a pleasanter house in B.

        Ellen & Waldo send love.

        Good night.

                Your dutiful Son.

                                Anson
