GOODELL FAMILY LETTERS- #40

Anson to Parents

June 25th [1865?]

Dear Father & Mother

I have just returned from church and now sit t pen a hasty line to you. I wrote you last week. And not hearing from the letter would like to know its whereabouts. Have you received it? If not please let me know at once.

Edwin has been with us and we enjoyed his visit very much. Waldo will probably go to Boston to spend the Fourth so you will not get a visitor from Brookfield this time.

We shall not come home again probably before Thanksgiving and possibly not before spring.

My health has not been as good this month and at times I have seriously feared a return of last summer’s experience. But I have found some bitter that I think are helping me and I am much better than a fortnight ago. Then I had to quit work for two or three days. We are expecting three days next week to rest.

Father, what do you think of my settling in Brookfield. There are or will be two or three places for sale this Fall ranging from $1200 to $1800 now had I not far better paying interest money than house rent.

I shall have to pay from $80 to 100 for house rent. I think it would be better to pay 50 or 60 for interest & taxes.

Edwin offers to put in his money and I think by next spring I could add 200 to his and buy a good place without paying interest on more than 300 or 400 dollars.

There is a place close by us that will be for sale soon. The house is a pretty cottage of eight rooms good size 7 convenient to which is attached a barn 20 x 28 ft I should guess – an excellent garden – about 50 fruit trees – that last year yielded 30 bbls of good apples. They cut about a ton of good hay. It also has two wells – good water – one which is in the house cellar. It is need of some repairs by way of paper, paint, etc. been built about 11 or 12 years.

There is a good house spot in the orchard if one wanted to build between the house & road and I could then rent the old house for 100 or 115 dollars. No price is set as yet but it will probably bring from 1600 to 1800 dollars. Morgan who owns it now  paid 1500 five years ago.

Advise me what you think of the matter. The place is growing very fast & this property five years will be worth five hundred more than now. Talk the matter over with Edwin if he is at home Fourth.

                                    Good night -     A.P. & E.A.

                                            Love
